(I love this film - the scene at the end when Mac is back in Texas staring down at the city made me feel exactly how I feel when I've come home from a holiday and really wish I was still away. It's extraordinary that a film can be that accurate in creating such a specific feeling, in this case a specific feeling of longing to be somewhere else. 'Tis a really quite brilliant film).

I like a bit of self depreciating humour - and Jon Ronson's description of himself as ""Essentially a humorous journalist...out of my depth." pretty much sums up the what and the how of what he does. I think this approach to journalism worked best in his book "Them: Adventures With Extremists" - where his approach - which appears amateurish (though I guess this may be a little contrived) allows the extremists to damn them selves with their own idiocy. As an approach to journalism it perhaps proved more effective than that of the most driven crusade of the most committed investigative journalist.

Beyond this Ronson's writing has a knack for homing in the absurd, the odd and the awkward aspects of modern life in a way that certainly makes me laugh. Laugh enough in fact to recommend his books to any reading this. So I will

He Kills Coppers.

Very excited at the prospect of ITV's new Sunday night series "He Kills Coppers" - which is an adaptation of Jake Arnott's second novel. The BBC's adaptation of his first novel "The Long Firm" was one of the best TV shows of the decade and it is quite surprising that it has taken so long for a second adaptation to appear.

The novel is a fictional reworking of the true events surrounding the murder of a policeman carried out by Harry Roberts in 1966 - (the event behind the football terrace chant "Harry Roberts is our friend, he kills coppers). Because he takes as his inspiration real events and real characters, Arnott's work (much like the American writer James Ellroy) taps into some sort of popular collective history.

Of course the danger of populating his drama with Soho gangsters and bent coppers and so on is that they could easily end up being little more than being cliched and generic and obvious, and you could end up with another example of the dull witted crime capers that were produced in the last decade and in this. But Arnott, again like Ellroy, is so much better than many of his peers. In Arnott's trilogy ("The Long Firm", "He Kills Coppers" and "Truecrime"), you find vivid and complex characters inhabiting a brilliantly realised history of the last 4 decades of the last century in this country.

The books really are a cracking read, I wish there was more telly like the BBC's "The Long Firm" and I hope the ITV series does justice to "He Kills Coppers"
